    ILO Skills Challenge Innovation Call ($ 50,000 Grant)

    The ILO is calling on individuals and organizations to share innovative ideas and solutions to address the skills mismatch challenge. The ILO Skills Challenge Innovation Call will recognise and support the development of solutions that aim to address the different forms and dimensions of skills mismatch.

    These can include proposals to:

    • enhance the effectiveness of vocational education and training programmes through innovative delivery and assessment partnerships;
    • improve the development and recognition of knowledge, skills and attributes of employees through innovative work based learning initiatives;
    • empower enterprises to better utilise the skills of their workers;
    • improve the collection, analysis, management and use of data and information on skill needs and labour market trends;
    • improve the training and employment of under-represented groups including migrant and refugees, people with disabilities, young people and women;
    • improve the provision of active labour market programmes through the integrated provision of vocational and job search assistance, training and work placement for the unemployed; and
    • to establish new and innovative multi-stakeholder partnerships to address skills mismatch at the regional, sectoral or local levels.

    Requirements

    Any individual or any formally constituted and registered organisation/company in existence for at least two calendar years prior to the deadline. By organizations we mean cooperatives, education and training institutions (including schools, public and private training providers and universities), government agencies, NGOs and civil society organizations, public and private enterprises, regional and sectoral bodies and research organisations.

    ILO is open to all ideas and solutions at any stage of development. They can be at an early-stage or more mature innovation. They can be a one person’s idea or involve a collaborative joint effort from different actors, such as governments, employers’ and workers’ organizations.

    An expert evaluation panel will evaluate all proposals and the winner will receive support to turn the idea into reality and cement their role as innovators in skills development.

    Benefits:

    The winning entry will receive substantial support comprised on the following:

    • Financial support: The winner will receive a $50,000 grant to implement the proposed solution;
    • Six-month innovation lab: The winner will receive technical support to transform the idea into a prototype ready to be piloted, including through boot camps and remote mentoring via a virtual platform;
    • Worldwide visibility: The winner will receive support through awareness raising of the idea and solution, including an invitation to a global event to present the innovation concept to potential partners and sponsors, press articles in media channels, videos, among others;
    • Extended network and partnerships: The winner and shortlisted entries will join the ILO’s Global Network of Skills Innovators. They will have the opportunity to exchange with other innovators and share their solutions with ILO’s stakeholders

    • Launch of the Call: 29 January 2020;
    • Submission deadline for ideas: 13 April 2020 (midnight, Geneva time);
    • Announcement of winner: 14 May 2020;
    • Skills Innovation Lab commences: September 2020;

    “A Letter from Myself in 2030”

    Imagine what an ideal world ten years from now would be like. Write a letter from yourself in 2030 to your present (2020) self, in which you describe the state of the world, the way people are living, and what you, yourself, are doing in society. In addition, include any important message that you might wish to tell your present self.

    1. Essays may be submitted by anyone up to 25 years old (as of June 15, 2020) in one of the following age categories: a) Children (ages up to 14) b) Youth (ages 15 – 25)
    2. Essays must be 700 words or less in English, French, Spanish or German, or 1600 characters or less in Japanese, excluding essay title and cover page. Essays may be typed or printed.

    The HSRC conducts large-scale, policy-relevant, social-scientific research for public sector users, non-governmental organisations and international development agencies. Research activities and structures are closely aligned with South Africa’s national development priorities.

    The HSRC’s integrated research programmes provide single points of entry – complete with a critical mass of researchers – for interdisciplinary and problem-orientated research in the following areas:

    • Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation Indicators
    • Democracy, Governance and Service Delivery
    • Economic Performance and Development

    The HSRC therefore seeks to appoint 10 x Masters Research Interns who are able to assume duty before 31 March 2020. These positions can be based in any one of the HSRC’s offices, namely Cape Town, Durban, or Pretoria.

    The Master’s Research Internships within the HSRC is meant to provide the successful candidates with an opportunity to further develop their research expertise by working with subject experts and project specialists. The research internship experience is intensive and seeks mature individuals who are able to work independently as well as in a team. While appointees will be exposed to a wide variety of project-related research, they will be expected to complete their thesis within a 2 year period. Time is set aside for this purpose.

    Key responsibilities:

    Among other duties, they will participate in the following activities under supervision:

    •The conceptualisation and execution of research projects;
    •The formulation of research questions and funding proposals;
    •The submission of research proposals for ethical review;
    •Collection and analysis of data;
    •Write up of research including conference presentations, research reports and manuscripts for publication; and

    Main tasks and Responsibilities of the Position:
    To be provided by the respective Supervisor and reflected in the Terms of Reference for the internship.

    Requirements:

    Candidates for internships at UNAIDS must be enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate or postgraduate degree program at a recognized educational institution (and have completed three years of full-time studies) or have completed a course of study and have been awarded an undergraduate, graduate or postgraduate degree at a recognized educational institution.

    If candidates are recent graduates they will be expected to start and complete the internship within 12 months of their date of graduation.

    Centre for Housing and Sustainable Development, University of Lagos

    This post is to join the Lagos team of the Appropriation of Informal Spaces for Leisure Physical Activity (ALPhA) study funded by the British Academy’s Urban Infrastructures of Well-Being 2019 Programme, under the UK Government’s Global Challenges Research Fund. The project is led by the MRC Epidemiology unit, University of Cambridge, UK with collaborating partners in Lagos, Nigeria (Centre for Housing and Sustainable Development, University of Lagos) and Yaoundé, Cameroon (University of Yaoundé).

    The Centre for Housing and Sustainable Development (www.chsunilag.com) is a research centre dedicated to training, research and advocacy around broad issues of urban sustainability. It is the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) Centre of Excellence for Urbanisation and Habitable Cities. The focus of research within the centre is encapsulated around eight thematic clusters ranging from housing, urbanisation dynamics, infrastructure, health, pro-poor development, spatial data infrastructure to construction skill development and land management.

     

    PROJECT AIM

    The built environment is a critical determinant of physical activity (PA), a risk factor for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular and respiratory diseases and premature mortality. But due to unmet need for PA infrastructure, public spaces in African cities are increasingly appropriated for leisure physical activity (LPA) under hazardous conditions.

    The overall aim of the ALPhA study is to apply participatory approaches to investigate public space LPA to re-imagine urban space for healthy, safe LPA in Lagos and Yaoundé. The study will explore patterns and experiences of appropriated public space LPA, and health risk exposures in order to inform urban infrastructure investments that support safe, equitable physical activity and population wellbeing.
    The incumbent will be based at the Centre for Housing and Sustainable Development, University of Lagos but would be expected to liaise with researchers and coordinators working in Yaoundé and Cambridge.

    SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

    Essential:

    • Doctoral degree in urban studies, public health, urban health, or related fields
    • Experience in engaging with policy/ civil society stakeholders
    • Experience of conducting literature reviews
    • Experience in planning, implementing and managing research projects
    • Expertise in qualitative research methods including focus group discussions, in-depth interviews, and policy analysis
    • Experience of conducting community-based research involving field-based data collection
    • Proven skills in working independently to solve research-related problems
    • Strong skills and experience in working collaboratively as a member of a team
    • Evidence of meeting deadlines and delivering timely results
    • Highly motivated, flexible and adaptable, and capable of taking independent decisions
    • Well organised, self-motivated, and proactive, including the ability to plan ahead in order to meet future objectives
    • Academic publication and presentation record commensurate with stage of academic career.
    • Fluency in written and spoken English
    • Ability to work flexible hours as required for the study

    Advantageous:

    • Experience with participatory research / citizen science methodology
    • Experience with spatial analysis methods and tools
    • Experience of working with collaborators in other disciplines on multi-disciplinary projects and the synthesis of different types of evidence
    • Experience of research translation and /or knowledge exchange with policy makers and practitioners

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Conduct mixed methods literature review in the area of physical activity and public space research.
    • Development and completion of study documents
    • Preparation and maintenance of study documents for ethics committee, funders and investigators
    • Supervision of research assistants
    • Assist Principal and co-investigators with preparation of reports including progress and financial reporting
    • Plan, direct and manage activities as part of the study objectives including coordination of participant recruitment, obtaining informed consent, stakeholder mapping, quantitative and qualitative (focus group discussion, in-depth interviews) data collection and analyses, being accountable to the lead investigators.
    • Work collaboratively with ALPhA study partners in Cambridge, UK and Yaoundé, Cameroon, providing scientific support and expertise as required to deliver high quality research
    • Coordinate data management across different databases
    • Monitoring progress of the research studies to ensure compliance with project protocol and timelines
    • Attend virtual and in-person study meetings and training
    • Ensure the research is carried in accordance with good practice and in compliance with local polices and legal and ethical requirements.
    • Disseminate research through contribution to drafting of multi-authored papers and reports
    • Contribute to knowledge exchange and public engagement activities, communicating research and findings to policy makers, practitioners and members of the public and understanding their perspectives.
    • The post-holder will be expected to have the skills and understanding to be able to act independently in solving problems, many of which may require novel approaches.

    VALUE AND TENURE

    The value of the Fellowship is =N= 3,125,980.00 – =N= 4, 307,290.00) per year for an initial 6 month term, which will be extended based on satisfactory performance. The fellowship does not include relocation costs or fringe benefits.

    The incumbent will be provided with a desk and appropriate access rights to use the research facilities of the Centre for Housing and Sustainable Development, University of Lagos.

    Kampala Biennale (KAB20) launches a call for young artists worldwide to participate in the studios that will be offered by the eight artists invited by Librettist Simon Njami.

    KAB20 is a story of transmission from one generation of artists to the next. Unlike the common format of major biennales which historically show and promote the best of their time, as a platform where professionals and the market can come and choose the next big artist, KAB is choosing a format that vehicles our continent’s original values of sharing and transferring knowledge. Thus, KAB20 will take on a master/apprentice format to allow for the transmission of artistic skill from contemporary art masters to the future generation of artists.

    For KAB20, Njami has invited 8 internationally renown artists to open their studios in Kampala to young Ugandan, African and international artists. The Master artists will open their studios for a 20 days period in Kampala, Uganda, according to their own practices in order to cover all the different aspects of contemporary art today (sculpture, performance, installation, video, painting, photography, etc).

    KAB20 is a studios programme with simultaneous studio workshops that will run from August 1st to 20th, 2020, and an international exhibition that will take place from August 26th to September 30th, 2020, in the city of Kampala, with a catalogue, a symposium and the Education programme. The opening week will run from August 26th to 29th, 2020. The eight Masters Studios ( follow the link with their names to their biography)

    From 1st August – 21st August, followed by the Biennale Opening Week.

    5. You will be welcomed at Entebbe’s international airport in Uganda at your arrival and departure.

    7. The artwork(s) created during the Studio, if it’s a collective project or an individual piece, will be exhibited as part of the Biennale exhibition, following curator Simon Njami’s decision. This same work, with your name acknowledged, will be published in the catalogue (if produced) and online.
    8. Simon Njami, as the Librettist of the Biennale, will select the artworks exhibited in consultation with the Masters.
    9. The individual work(s) exhibited will remain your property. In the case of collective work, the ownership will be discussed with the Biennale, the Masters and the Librettist.

    The Harvard Stem Cell Institute (HSCI) Internship Program (HIP) provides non-Harvard undergraduate students with a focused and challenging summer research experience in a cutting-edge stem cell science laboratory. Interns are exposed to different professional options within the scientific arena through a stem cell seminar series, a career pathways presentation, and a weekly stem cell companion course. Students present their summer research findings, both orally and in poster format, at the HIP Symposium—a requirement of all program participants.
