She Has Hosted More Than 2,400 Corporate Events. Meet Carolyn Howell, The Queen of Event Planning.

Carolyn Howell, the founder of Events USA, is a brilliant entrepreneur, a visionary, and also the queen of event planning. Over the past two decades, her Washington, DC area-based company has planned, organized, and hosted more than 2,400 successful corporate events. Her clients include Time Warner, Cox Communications, Accenture, BMW, Samsung, Microsoft, the American Diabetes Association, and many, many more.

    Not just another party company

Events USA is not a party company. Yes, it is true that they have created and managed amazing events for thousands of corporate clients, but none of these were run-of-the-mill parties. This is due to Carolyn’s belief that corporate events should strengthen a company’s culture, thereby contributing to their bottom line.

So, the events that she creates are workshops, conferences, retreats, and/or team building events that strengthen the relationships between both a company’s employees and their clients. “Such corporate events are a necessary part of any healthy company’s calendar,” Carolyn says.

How she brings events to life
Carolyn says that she and her team begin by listening to their client’s vision, and reviewing the space at hand before developing an event plan or choosing décor. She comments, “We take into account the entire space, including entrances and travel paths, when choosing décor. How many people will attend? Is it a day or night event? Who is attending? Everything factors into our final choices.”After listening to her client’s ideas, she then crafts a theme, and supplies the decorations that bring the concept together. Why she is so successfulEvent planning is very competitive, so how did Carolyn manage to host 2,400+ events over the last 20 years? Two things: passion and strategic alliances. She has an ongoing passion to help companies resolve challenges within their workforce through strategically crafted events, and this has earned her high praise from both her clients and attendees to her events.

In addition, Carolyn is connected with all the right people! She has strategic alliances with nationally recognized human resource experts, certified specialists and professional educators, culinary food and beverage, premium entertainment artists, performers and first rate amusements providers.

    An inspiration to other entrepreneurs

Anyone affiliated with Carolyn says the same thing. She is professional, knowledgeable, reliable, imaginative, an expert, and… a life-saver.

She is also an inspiration to other aspiring entrepreneurs (especially women entrepreneurs) who want to take on the multi-billion dollar event planning industry.

  • 15-Year Old Black Teen Entrepreneur Signs Licensing Deal With the NBA

15-Year Old Black Teen Entrepreneur Signs Licensing Deal With the NBA

Young entrepreneur Moziah “Mo” Bridges was just 12 years old when he appeared on ABC’s Shark Tank to promote his Memphis based company, Mo’s Bows, which manufactures handmade bow and neckties. Now 15, this young Black teen just signed a licensing deal with the NBA, giving him the rights to manufacture his products with the logos of NBA clubs.

The NBA is excited about the launch of the Mo’s Bows NBA Collection because it increases their merchandise distribution to NBA fans. For Bridges, it means a seven-figure licensing deal and an important step in expanding his business. Mo comments, “Partnerships like this one will help me reach my goals of having a full clothing line by the time I graduate from college.”

    Impressive from the start

When Bridges and his mother appeared on Shark Tank in 2014, shark Daymond John immediately invested into Mo’s business. John saw in Bridges “a young man with a great vision and a mother with a strong business sense.”

His instincts were right. Sales of Mo’s Bows at retailers like Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdales went through the roof. Bridges was named to TIME Magazine’s Most Influential Teen List in 2015. He was even invited to the White House by former President Barack Obama, and ESPN hired Bridges as a fashion correspondent for their NBA Draft telecast.

This was quite an impressive start for Moziah Bridges. But he is far from done. In fact, he is just getting started! “My goal has always been to make Mo’s Bows a household name for kid entrepreneurship and men’s accessories,” explains Bridges.

    Already in motion

Mo Bridges has come a long way, but it is very clear that he also has plans to go much, much farther. And he is not wasting time! He is already producing and selling his NBA bowties for the Memphis Grizzlies, the Cleveland Cavaliers, and the Golden State Warriors.

  • How To Start An Event Planning Company with Nothing!

How To Start An Event Planning Company with Nothing!

Weddings, Conferences, Musical Concerts, naming and birthday ceremonies will never cease to be celebrated. They take place in the country almost every weekend and we can all admit that the headache of event owners is the planning and organizing of their events.

Event planners and organizers can take almost all the tedious work that event owners had to do. You can take up the planning and organizing of weddings, excursions, workshops, birthday ceremonies, naming ceremonies, musical concerts, conferences and church programs.
You will not be planning and organizing these events for yourself but rather for your customers and when you are done, you take your check.

Some church groups might want to embark on an excursion to other regions and you can take up that contract. On the D-day, they only need to come to the meeting point and a bus will be waiting to take them to all the places they paid for.

Event organising is a stressful job and you must expect that when you are thinking about the good money you might make.

    How to start

One needs partners to be successful in this area especially if you are new or lacks the finances to start it from your own pocket. You can do away with your partners once you can provide all the services they provide on your own or by your own team.

One good thing about using partners is that it takes away part of the pressure and work from you. Since these partners are specialists in their areas, they already have supervisors and leaders who will see to it that the right thing is done.

Your partners must include providers of sound systems, chairs and canopy hiring services, Fashion and decoration, photography, car/bus hiring, catering services etc.

You must contact all of them, get their rates and prepare your own rates based on the services a customer might request. You need more than one partner in each category. You must have the contact of two or three hiring services. Sometimes you might get more than one contract a week or your partner might be engaged for a particular week so you need more options.

If a customer needs only a venue decoration and food for 100 guest with video coverage, you must know how much you will charge based on the figures you got from the individual partners.
Draft your services and rates and print it out into a nice booklet that can be given to customers to glance through and select their choices. Don’t make promises you cannot keep because the success of an event planning and organising business lies on referrals. One customer is happy with your services, he refers another person to you. Guide your integrity.

You can start from nothing and make it big. You only need a name, sim card and partners to work with. So you only act as a supervisor of the various partners’ works.

  • Meet Mojolaoluwa Olaifa, The Young Law Graduate Championing Peace in Nigeria.

Meet Mojolaoluwa Olaifa, The Young Law Graduate Championing Peace in Nigeria.

Just like Mirabelle Morah and Feyisayo Adanlawo, Mojola is also a young Nigerian making waves in her small corner to make sure peace becomes a lasting thing for Nigerians. Born to Mr. and Dr. T. O. Olaifa, Mojola attended Total Child School and later to Omolaja Sodipo Memorial Anglican School (OSMAS), all in the Ogun State in the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Catching up with Mojola at the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria in Lagos, she opened up on how she ended up doing what she is currently doing and her aspirations for the future. Lets read what she had to say.

    Who is Mojolaoluwa Olaifa?

Mojolaoluwa Olaifa is a Law graduate from the University of Ibadan, a writer and a strategist.  I am passionate about capacity building for teenagers and youths, peace building and corporate governance. I volunteer with Stephanie Peace Building and Development Foundation (SPADEV) and serves as a Project Officer. I specialise in areas of Peace Education, monitoring, evaluation and empowerment of beneficiaries. Working with Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) has sparked my interest in humanitarian work and in the possibilities available in a world that seems so bleak. I have also honed my skills in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) methods and have put them into practise as a worker in SPADEV and also as a Clinician in the Women’s Law Clinic, University of Ibadan.

Mojolaoluwa is also a member of the Freedom of Information Coalition Committee and the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) Ogun State Branch. I have also been trained as a professional events planner.

    Developing Passion for Law

I, initially, did not start out with a passion for Law, but it just seemed like the right course to study at the time. However, since I was a child I have always had a questioning mind and a passion for order and idealism and so it did not come as a surprise how the courses that really ignited a fire in me were Criminology, Company Law, Constitutional law and International Law. I discovered the problem with our society is not necessarily a problem of governance or of corruption but a more fundamental issue which was total disregard for the ideal system of processes. Ethical ineptitude and moral decadence were and still are the accepted modus of operandi.

    Overcoming Challenges

At first, standing up to these issues was a difficult task because the culture here is that it is considered disrespectful to speak against your elders, however, once people got past the stage of irritation and decided to listen they often agreed with me and volunteered themselves to building new and sustainable systems that reduced corruption to the barest minimum and established discipline and order in their institutions.

Also, combining my education with volunteering work and other learning experiences was a herculean task that demanded that I worked twice as hard as any other regular student in other to balance them all beautifully. I often encouraged myself however that making my country a better place was a cause that was worth the struggle. Another challenge I encounter daily is the challenge of funding  but I have learnt that people invest in dreams that they believe in and so I make them carry this dream of a better world in their hearts  by conveying my intention as best as I can to them and implore them to invest in it.

    Current Activities

Currently, my organisation has been able to secure collaborations and affiliations with the UNDP (Nigeria) Conflict Resolution, European Union, West Africa Network for Peace Building (WANEP), West Africa Action Against Small Arms, Children of Hope Global Alliance Incorporated ( Atlanta , Georgia)  among others.  With my colleagues we have been able to address issues of environmental flooding and pollution. We have ensured the return to school of Juvenile offenders in the state and also empowered those unable to school with vocational skills free of charge. We have re-united families and empowered widows and young mothers. We have established peace clubs in both private and public secondary schools and public primary schools and have trained their teachers to head these peace clubs whiles we effectively monitor the activities of these clubs. We have also organised seminars, workshops and trainings for Stakeholders in Peace and Conflict Resolution in Ogun State, Nigeria.

    What does the future hold?

In twenty years from now, I hope to have succeeded in impacting my society both the private sector and the public sector, especially in areas of discipline, ethics, peace and accountability in such a manner that the name corruption is no longer synonymous to the name of my country, Nigeria. I also hope that by then the leaders would understand the need for accountability to the electorates, that the youths would have both religious and ethnic tolerance amongst them and would no longer avail themselves of the opportunity to be used as instruments of violence. I hope that in twenty years, the systems, that is, corporate and public sectors would flourish with ethical workers and that the world would be a safe haven to raise the next generation.

Advise for the Youth of Africa

I would say to the young people of Africa that tomorrow has come and tomorrow will never come. It is time to get involved with the running of things. It is not enough to complain and identify the wrong things, we have to take action. We have to speak with one voice, we have to speak with our tears, with our toils, with our intellects, with our writings, with our vocations, with our sweat, with our unity …whatever we do, we must not stop speaking.
