10 Reasons Why Your Boss Doesn’t Like You According to Uncle Ebo Whyte

I often hear people say “my boss doesn’t like me”. Well, bosses are human and there are certain traits in a worker that out them off. Here are some of the things you could be doing that make it difficult for your boss to like you. You can turn the situation around and become the boss’ favorite.

1. YOU LIE TO THE BOSS– Bosses cannot do everything themselves. They cannot be everywhere and see everything, so they depend on the reports and insights o their staff. Every boss prays for and cherishes staff who tell him the truth and help him to know exactly what is going on. The staff who lies to his boss undermines the effectiveness of the boss and no boss likes such a worker. The boss will work with what he is told and if it’s a lie, the boss’ decision will be wrong and the whole company can suffer. So, if you want to be in the good books of your boss, do not lie to him or her.

2. YOU ARE CRITICAL OF YOUR COLLEAGUES OR ONLY MAKE NEGATIVE COMMENTS ABOUT THEM.-

There is nothing more irritating for boss than a staff who always comes with negative stories and reports about his colleagues. The staff who is overly critical and cynical about his colleagues drains the energy of his boss and boss likes that. The irony is that such a worker is often the person who is doing the most damage to the company. He talks negatively about his colleagues in order to hide what he is doing to destroy the company and undermine his boss.

3. YOU ARE ALWAYS MAKING DEMANDS FOR YOURSELF-

Every boss knows such a worker and hates him/her. S/he is the only worker who only knocks on your door to make demands for him/herself. This staff only comes to see you when he wants something for himself. It gets to the point where you simply don’t want to see or talk to him. As a worker, you may initially have needs that will require your boss’ help but if the only time your boss sees you is when you talk about your needs the you will become a pain in the backside. Make it a point to go to your boss with ideas that will make the company grow; go with solutions to problems and proposals to help the company make more money and be productive. Then the day you will go with a personal need, your boss will feel obliged to help you.

4. YOU DON’T DELIVER RESULTS-

If you don’t deliver results, you can be sure that boss wishes he can get rid of you because you are not worth the space you take up in the company. Some workers pretend to be working but there is nothing to show for their activity; others are all talk but cannot produce any results. It is difficult to stand such workers because your performance and the boss depends on their results. Such a worker cannot be in your good books.

5. YOU TALK NEGATIVELY BEHIND THE BOSS-

Office politics being what it is, you can be sure that whatever negative thing you say behind the boss will eventually get to him. In the work place, everyone wants to court the favour of the boss so your colleagues will not hesitate to sacrifice you to win it. Since whatever negative thing you say will get to him, learn to keep your opinion of the boss to yourself.

6. YOU COST THE COMPANY MONEY AND EMBARRASSMENT-

There is the worker who is always making mistakes that cost the company money; or he is always saying the wrong thing to a customer or the public and causing huge embarrassment to the company. There is the worker who is always driving away customers and clients with their attitude and statements. Such workers cannot be in good books of any boss.

7. YOU DON’T PRESENT YOURSELF WELL-

Every boss expects his staff to groom themselves well so they project a good image of the company. The worker who is shabby in his/ her appearance and disorganized in his work is hard to tolerate. Workers must understand that they represent the image of the company and when they present themselves well, it is always pleasing to the boss.

8. YOU DON’T KNOW YOUR PLACE AS FAR AS THE BOSS IS CONCERNED-

The boss may have been your classmate in school; he may be a member of your church but in the workplace, he is your boss and you should learn to treat him as such. So, don’t go into your boss’ office and go into his fridge to help yourself with its content. Respect the boss and don’t call him by a nickname during office hours. Respect his time and don’t walk into his office anytime you like just to chat. Suspend your friendship with the boss during office hours.

9. YOU ARE A DISRUPTIVE ELEMENT IN THE COMPANY-

There are workers who are always setting fire in the workplace. If you find a worker angry, that worker is the cause; if you find low morale in your workers, this worker is the cause. He messes everyone up; he meddles in things that are none of his business; he interferes with the work of others; he is rude to his colleagues and cause disaffection; he refuses to cooperate with anyone unless it is his idea and he gets the credit. He takes credit for the work of others and puts down and undermines his colleagues. Such a worker cannot be trusted in the good books of any boss who is worth his salt.

10. YOU DON’T KEEP THE CONFIDENCE OF THE BOSS-

Being a boss is lonely job. Sometimes you want to give vent to your feelings or use someone as a sounding board. And it is painful when a worker you confide in betrays that confidence by going to tell others. The worker who cannot keep the secret things the boss shares with him will soon find that he has no access to the boss.
