The Anglogold Ashanti Obuasi Mine has commissioned a two-storey 12 unit ultra-modern block on 20th January, 2020. As part of the company’s mission to provide solution providers through formal education, an Eric Wireku Asubonteng led Anglogold Ashanti commissioned a stunning building to facilitate teaching and learning. The block was named after the former senior sustainability manager of the Obuasi Mine who lost his life in a car accident on 4th May, 2019.
The epoch making ceremony was preluded by an entertaining exhibition by the school troupe and brigade team and seized the opportunity to welcome the Queen mother of New Edubiase Traditional Area ( Obaahemaa Afua) and her entourage to the ground. The ceremony was graced by the echelons at Obuasi Mine and dignitaries from the municipality. The senior managers of various departments at the Mine such as Sustainability, Human Resource, Finance, Operations and Project were all present alongside the Alumini Association of the school, Operation Vanguard Team, Obuasi Municipal Police Department and astute people of the media.
The Executive Manager of the Anglogold Ashanti School reminisced the achievement of the school in his welcome address. He emphatically stated, that, “the school had been adjudged as the best performing basic school in the Ashanti region”. He did back it with the testament of Ghana Education Service for the avoidance of doubt. The management of the school oversees a population of two thousand and thirty nine (2,039) and have recruited two hundred (200) graduate teachers with the exquisite skills to achieve the fundamental goals of the school. He had kind words for the late Nana Ampofo-Bekoe for his relentless contributions to the success of the new block. He therefore confirmed the transitions of names for the various halls made by management of the school. Forthwith, the Junior High block was named as Franklin Manu Block, Assembly hall named as Adansiman Block, Lower Primary block named as Fred Attakuma Block and Main Administration block as Eric Wireko Asubonteng Block.
Mr. Anis Haffar who capacitates as a Board Chairman of the school also spoke of the vision management has for the school. Inspiring his audience with his academic journey in life, he climaxed his speech by buttressing the school’s vision on raising an army of students whose trademark will be problem solvers and accomplishers. He also praised the efforts by the current Ministry of Education for inputting pragmatic features in the new educational syllabus to boost functional education. According to him, this system will help the children from being theoretical to being practical to effect needed changes when the need arises.
The Managing Director of Anglogold Ashanti, Mr. Eric Asubonteng acceded to the framers of the 1992 constitution to give the right to any individual as the company shares the same thought on the vitality of education in national development. He said the company perceives education as a means to reduce poverty, promote health and make the environment sustainable for the future. In light of that, the company would indulge in all inclusive and sustainable means to provide good education for the people of Obuasi. He confirmed that the company has engineered a scholarship program to socially intervene for the brilliant but needy students. The program has seen 10 students pursue the academic goals and it looks on reaching many more. The company also sponsored training services for Circuit Supervisors to strengthen supervision in the Municipality. He pinpointed that the school became an autonomous non-profiting organization in 2014. The company notwithstanding offers budgetary support for the school when necessary. He said this to praise the management of the school for its overwhelming academic feat of recording 100% pass and 89.7% distinction which unequivocally saw the school leapfrogged all others in Ashanti region. He also paid tribute to the late Nana Ampofo-Bekoe for his tremendous and tireless contribution to the success of the building. The loss of former Sustainability Manager was of a great blow to the company but his impact is everlasting.
Mr. Asubonteng commissioned the ultra-modern 12 unit block which was named after the former Senior sustainability Manager of the Mine, Nana Ampofo-Bekoe, who passed on in May 2019.
