Raven Fisher, a mother of two young ones, knows by experience how important it is for children to have a fun and safe place to play and connect with other children. However, she couldn’t find an ideal facility that would suit those needs. So after securing about $120,000 in funding, Raven is set to open her very own child care drop off center and play place for children in Detroit called Social Tykes.
Raven would often take her 4-year old and 6-month old to indoor play places such as Jungle Java. However, she noticed that facilities like that were usually full of older children ages 6 and above. They were also often crowded, limiting a good connection between mothers and their kids.
According to SmallBusinessBrain.com, that’s when Raven decided to create a space of her own where toddlers could play and participate in educational activities created specifically for children under the age of 6. The intimate ambiance would let mothers connect with their kids, socialize with their fellow mothers, and even attend yoga classes.
Her company, Social Tykes, offers unique child care services that allow parents to drop-off their children for up to 5 hours if they need daycare while they attend an appointment. There is also a co-working space for mothers who need to finish their work. The facility is available to rent for those who wish to host children’s parties as well.
To help make her idea happen, she received a $60,000 cash grant from the Motor City Match Program and another $60,000 in microloan funding from Detroit Development Fund. She was also able to find and secure a convenient location in the Corktown Historic District in Detroit.
