AngloGold Ashanti Raises GH₵27k through Voluntary contributions of workers to support Cancer Research

Female Employees of AngloGold Ashanti, Obuasi Mine, have handed over a check of GH₵27,277.40 to the Noguchi Memorial Research Institute to support their research on cancer. The amount was raised through voluntary contributions of over 400 workers of the mining giant.

In October, AngloGold Ashanti in collaboration with the AngloGold Ashanti Health Foundation through various activities took breast cancer education and free breast screening to the doorsteps of various communities and institutions to commemorate the World Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  2,436 people between the ages of 11 and 88 were screened, of which 126 were men. 140 of those screened had suspicious findings that warranted further investigation.

Speaking after the presentation, Prof. Regina Appiah Opong who received the check on behalf of Noguchi Memorial Research Institute said the amount couldn’t have come at a good time.

“This amount will help support our research since the equipment we use are very expensive and are imported into the country”, she said.

Prof. Appiah Opong also used the opportunity to inform the Mine of their 40th anniversary celebration this year and presented their anniversary cloth to the mine.

The Sustainability Manager of AngloGold Ashanti, Obuasi Mine, Mr. Emmanuel Baidoo noted that, Noguchi Memorial Research Institute’s credibility in cancer research in and outside the country prompted the mine to make that donation to support their work.
