The Entrepreneur Definition: John D Rockefeller’s Oil Empire

John D. Rockefeller can well be considered as one of the most successful business tycoon to ever walk the planet, and a great example of the typical successful entrepreneur definition. He set many first in the business world, the most important being the first to set up a “trust” in America and it can also be said that he inspired monopolization when it comes to businesses. Though he was known for his risky and aggressive business decisions, Rockefeller was also widely known for his philanthropic acts; as a matter, in a way, he defined what is now known as modern philanthropy. Aside from the fact that he was indeed very successful with his businesses, his strong will combined with a soft heart is the reason why his story is part of the greatest entrepreneur stories of all time.

John D. Rockefeller was born in New York and was the second of six kids. He was a part of a religious Baptist family and was a serious kid while growing up. Ever since he was young, he already had the makings of a great businessman. He was fond of math, enjoyed accounting for things, and was a highly organized individual. He also excelled in debates and had no problems expressing his ideas on point.

By the age of 16, Rockefeller landed his very first job as an assistant bookkeeper. It was here in this job that he developed and sharpened the complexities, methods, and systems that it takes to run a successful business. His innate qualities of being organized paid off in his job; he was a very detail oriented employee and was very good in the financial aspects. He was able to save quite a few dollars in his job as an assistant book keeper, and even at this young age he would usually spare a percentage of his salary to donate to charities and foundation.

After being exposed to the entrepreneurial world, Rockefeller together with Clark started to put up their very own company; Rockefeller was 19 when this happened. They both worked very hard and it eventually paid of allowing them to earn several thousands. After some time, their company moved to refineries. This was their biggest success, after several years they became Cleveland’s biggest refinery. Standard Oil Company was born; this was a business venture that Rockefeller took up along with his brother and other partners. He was highly competitive and made cut throat decisions to buy out other oil refinery companies. Indeed, after several years Rockefeller was able to monopolize the petroleum industry in America.

At the very height of his business, Rockefeller was worth approximately $1 billion. The great thing about Rockefeller is that even though he was widely known to make aggressive decision when it comes to his business, he remained to have a soft heart with helping people. He never lost his desire to help and share whatever he has. He was great businessman, but he was also a philanthropist by heart. He was very passionate about causes that could uplift mankind in whatever way possible; whether it be for education, health or anything else he would always be willing to help.

It is undeniable that John D. Rockefeller has contributed so much to America. He was able to revolutionize and inspire different aspects of the business. Aside from that he was also able to contribute greatly to charitable causes in the latter part of his life. His business genius is always something to take inspiration from and a great example of the true successful entrepreneur definition.
