Akuna Wallet Set to Revolutionize International Payments for Ghanaian Content Creators

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George (MP), has engaged in high-level discussions with the Chief Executive Officer of the Stellar Development Foundation (SDF), Ms. Denelle Dixon, as Ghana positions itself to revolutionize digital payments for content creators through the upcoming Akuna Wallet platform.

The meeting explored a collaborative framework involving the Ministry, the Stellar Development Foundation, and the Akuna Group—co-founded by international actor and creative entrepreneur Idris Elba—to introduce a seamless global payment solution that empowers Ghanaian creators, freelancers, and digital entrepreneurs to receive international payments easily and securely.

Hon. Samuel Nartey George expressed strong support for the initiative, highlighting its alignment with government’s vision of expanding financial inclusion and creating economic opportunities within the creative and digital sectors.

“Innovations like the Akuna Wallet remove barriers for our young creatives and accelerate Ghana’s digital transformation,” he stated.

During the briefing, Ms. Denelle Dixon explained that the Akuna Wallet is being developed under the oversight of the Bank of Ghana and is powered by blockchain technology. The platform enables users to receive international payments within seconds and convert them directly into Ghana cedis, eliminating delays and reducing dependency on intermediaries.

She added that the wallet will also provide users with virtual U.S. bank accounts, allowing Ghanaian creators to monetize content on global platforms such as X (Twitter), Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube without payment restrictions or bottlenecks.

According to Ms. Dixon, the Akuna Wallet is part of a larger innovation ecosystem—which includes Akuna Studiosand Akuna Pods—designed to foster collaboration, improve production capacity, and expand monetization opportunities for creators across Africa.

The digital wallet is currently undergoing industry and regulatory processes and is expected to be fully launched by December 2025, pending final approval.

If successful, Akuna Wallet will mark a major milestone in Ghana’s pursuit of digital financial inclusion, positioning the country as a leader in creator-focused fintech innovation on the continent.

The Artistic Mind of a Criminal

I used to have a client who is a professor when it comes to art, paintings and antiques. He paints one portrait and makes millions out of it and that really fascinated me so much that I started doing some research into the Art, paintings and antiques industry. I discovered that the painting industry in Ghana is very small and young but elsewhere in the world, it is a huge industry which contributes significantly to the economy of these countries. The USA economy in 2014 and 2015 benefited US$730 billion and US$763.6 billion respectively from the Art, Paintings and Antiques sector(1). US$12 billion (£9.2 billion) was contributed to the UK GDP in 2016 from the Art and Painting sector(2) with Singapore’s Art and Painting contributing S$2.13 billion to the GDP in 2013(3).
