Netflix Breaks Into Africa With a New Original Series, ‘Queen Sono’

Netflix has announced some pretty big news recently. After acquiring the rights to the African-written movie, Lionheart, the major streaming service is working on its first African original series. According to interviews, this will begin an ongoing trend where Netflix executives focus more on their international prospects – including a big focus on the African continent in the upcoming years.

Queen Sono will be a Netflix original series about a secret agent who works for an African agency. In true detective format, the main plot of the story will revolve around the main character’s search for ‘bad guys’ as she tries to crack tough cases. Threaded through the detective plot will be the issues Sono faces in her personal life.

As for the exact plot details for the first season, nobody is certain yet. Neither the network, producers, nor actors have released any information about season one’s central plot yet – but be sure to look for it in the near future.

The leading role on Sono will be played by South African actress, Pearl Thusi. Thusi is best known for her role as Dayana Mampasi in Quantico. She has also played parts in Kalush: The Story of Solomon Mahlangu, The Scorpion King: Book of Souls, and Catching Feelings.

The actress was born Sithembile Xola Pearl Thusi on May 13, 1988 in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Thusi had a love of acting early on in life, and has starred in a number of popular South African soap operas. Included among them are Isidingo.

It is directed by Kagiso Lediga

Director Kagiso Lediga will be running the show. Lediga is a comedian turned actor, producer, and director. He has worked with Thusi previously on the movie Catching Feelings. He has also produced WizardThe Pure Monate Show, and The Mayor.

Actress Pearl Thusi and director Kagiso Lediga have worked together before on the 2018 movie Catching Feelings. The movie was a dark romantic comedy about a young couple who has their lives turned upside down when an older writer moves in with them.

The release of this first original series by Netflix is a major milestone for the continent. Despite having one of the oldest storytelling traditions in the world, Africa has seen little breakthroughs in their artistic and/or movie industries. The cast and crew of Queen Sonofeel that this opportunity will bring attention to their part of the world for future projects.

According to Pearl Thusi herself, “It’s going to change the game for every artist on this continent. I cannot wait for every young woman, every woman on this continent and on this plant, to meet Queen Sono. We’ve worked so hard for this.”

Director Kagiso Lediga also had some words to say about how thrilled he is to be involved in this big milestone. In an interview with Dateline, Lediga stated that he was “… delighted to create this original series with Netflix, and… super excited by their undeniable ability to take this homegrown South African story to a global audience. We believe Queen Sono will kick the door open for more awesome stories from this part of the world.”

When can you watch ‘Queen Sono’?

Queen Sono will release globally in 2019. Although an exact date has not yet been confirmed, there should be a solid release set within the coming months. Netflix subscribers will be able to stream the show once it airs. Those who do not yet have a Netflix account can subscribe prior the show’s release to have full access to the first season.
