Obuasi: 2 Receive Nominations at Ghana 40under40 Awards

Two people from Obuasi received nominations at the Ghana 40under40 Awards. The list which was released within the week featured 100 Ghanaians under the age of 40 who are committed to business growth, professional excellence and community service and have risen up the ranks of their companies or industries at a relatively young age as result of this.

Marian Gifty Mensah and Wisdom Mawuli Parku are the two people on the list from Obuasi. Magmens Couture is run by its creative director, Marian Gifty Mensah, the award-winning fashion designer of Joy Prime Fashion Guru Sewing Bee. In 2019, she was nominated for the Female Fashion Entrepreneur of the Year at the Youth Entrepreneurs Awards 2019. Her designs have been showcased on numerous fashion shows in the country. Marian was on the Wundef Show last year to talk about how she started her business.

Marian’s nomination at the 40under40 Awards was in the Fashion category.

Wisdom Mawuli Parku is the CEO of Majora Group, a company he started in Obuasi. After he lost over Ghc3,000.00 to a travel and tour firm when he wanted to travel abroad in 2014, he decided to start his own company to help and prevent other people from losing money just as he did. Wisdom shared with me on the Wundef Show this year, how he started his company in Obuasi but now having another branch in Accra. He explains the challenges and how he ended up on the list of Forbes Africa 30 under 30 Class of 2020. Mawuli was nominated in the travel and tourism category.

The Forty under 40 Award is to identify, honour and celebrate a cross-section of the nations most influential and accomplished young business leaders under the age of forty from a wide range of industries. They believe that by putting the spotlight on these young achievers, it will not only celebrate them but also build a strong platform for them by giving a voice and opportunities to the next generation of industry pacesetters whiles building a positive attitude in our youth to strive for excellence at a tender age.

The Artistic Mind of a Criminal

I used to have a client who is a professor when it comes to art, paintings and antiques. He paints one portrait and makes millions out of it and that really fascinated me so much that I started doing some research into the Art, paintings and antiques industry. I discovered that the painting industry in Ghana is very small and young but elsewhere in the world, it is a huge industry which contributes significantly to the economy of these countries. The USA economy in 2014 and 2015 benefited US$730 billion and US$763.6 billion respectively from the Art, Paintings and Antiques sector(1). US$12 billion (£9.2 billion) was contributed to the UK GDP in 2016 from the Art and Painting sector(2) with Singapore’s Art and Painting contributing S$2.13 billion to the GDP in 2013(3).
