From Reposting to Retail: How Stella Alem Built Afrikthreads Collection from Her Passion and Persistence

In an era where African youth are rewriting the entrepreneurial narrative, Stella Alem stands out as a powerful example of how humble beginnings, perseverance, and community support can ignite a journey of business transformation. From reposting products for friends on social media to running her own physical store, Stella’s brand—Afrikthreads Collection—is steadily rising in Ghana’s competitive retail space.

Building Afrikthreads from the Ground Up

Afrikthreads Collection, founded in November 2019, is Stella’s brainchild, an eclectic business offering clothing, sneakers, heels, nightwear, and even kitchen appliances. What began as a side hustle has grown into a fashion-forward collection that blends affordability with style. The name itself reflects her vision: celebrating African heritage while keeping pace with contemporary tastes.

But this wasn’t always the plan.

“My mother and two of my friends motivated me. I used to sell in a shop when I was a kid. After tertiary education, I started reposting items for friends—and that’s how I got motivated to start my own brand,” Stella says.

The spark was there early, but the flame needed fuel. Armed with grit and an eye for trends, Stella transitioned from being a social media reseller to owning a small but vibrant physical shop. The shop, located in Bawku, is a statement of intent.

The Hustle Behind the Hashtag

The journey hasn’t been without its hurdles. Like many young African entrepreneurs, Stella’s biggest challenge has been capital.

“Most times I have to repost from a wholesaler and take monies to buy. Few are cool with that, but most prefer to come and see the goods before buying. Because of that, sometimes I lose a lot of clients,” she shares candidly.

Despite the setbacks, Stella remains undeterred. Her tenacity is rooted in her ability to adapt and in the loyalty of customers who appreciate her consistency and authentic customer service.

A Nurse by Profession, An Entrepreneur by Passion

What makes Stella’s story even more compelling is her dual path. A Registered Enrolled Nurse by training from Zuarungu Nursing and Midwifery College, she completed her studies in 2018 and is currently in her final year pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Midwifery. Balancing academic rigour with the demands of entrepreneurship is no easy feat, but she’s doing it—and thriving.

Eyes on the Future

When asked where she sees Afrikthreads Collection in the next three years, her voice lifts with confidence:

“I started as an online seller, and today I manage a physical shop. I believe in myself as a consistent person who doesn’t give up on her dreams. With persistence and reasonable capital, my business will grow to a bigger stand in the years to come.”

Her long-term goal? Scaling her brand beyond her current space, potentially opening multiple branches and even creating employment opportunities for others—especially young women who, like her, are striving to build their futures against the odds.
