iOS 17.5: EU Users Will be Able to Download Apps from 3rd Party Websites

Apple has taken a significant step towards a more open ecosystem with the release of iOS 17.5 beta 2 for developers. This update brings the ability for EU iPhone users to download apps directly from websites, bypassing the App Store entirely.

This functionality, known as sideloading, grants users greater freedom in choosing their apps. But unlike traditional sideloading where apps are downloaded from any source, Apple maintains some control.

Here’s what EU iPhone users can expect:

  • Download Apps Directly from Websites: iPhone users in the EU can download apps from developer websites, eliminating the need for the App Store.
  • Alternative App Stores Still Available: The ability to download apps from alternative app stores introduced in iOS 17.4 remains available.
  • Transparency and User Control: Before installing an app from a website, users will see a detailed information screen with the app name, developer information, description, and screenshots. Importantly, users will need to explicitly grant permission for the developer to install the app.

Benefits for Developers, with a Catch

Developers looking to bypass App Store fees can rejoice. Apps downloaded from websites won’t be subject to Apple’s standard revenue cut. However, Apple does impose a “Core Technology Fee” of €0.50 for each app installed over one million times per year. Thankfully, non-profit organizations, educational institutions, and government entities are exempt from this fee.

Limitations and Availability

It’s important to note that sideloading is currently limited to EU iPhone users in the iOS 17.5 beta and is not yet available to the public. Additionally, this functionality is exclusive to iPhones and not available on iPads.

A Step Towards a More Open iOS?

The introduction of sideloading for EU users represents a shift in Apple’s historically closed ecosystem. Whether this signifies a broader move towards a more open iOS or remains limited to complying with EU regulations remains to be seen. Only time will tell if sideloading becomes a mainstream feature for all iPhone users worldwide.
