KNUST student develops Prep AI — an intelligent study tool turning lecture notes into interactive questions.

Benjamin Etornam Abotsi, a third-year Computer Engineering student at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has developed Prep AI — a free, AI-powered study tool designed to support students in their academic journey.

But this wasn’t just another tech project. It was born out of personal loss.

Benjamin was grieving the sudden loss of his best friend. “I didn’t know what to do. I was just moving around. I couldn’t settle,” he recalls. With lectures, group projects, and the emotional weight of an impending funeral, the burden was overwhelming.

On the night of March 12, just before the burial, Benjamin sought refuge in his craft. He sat down with his laptop, not to escape, but to create. That night, Prep AI came to life.

Prep AI is simple yet powerful. Students upload lecture notes or slides, and the tool instantly generates relevant study questions along with answers. If a user answers incorrectly, the tool provides explanations to enhance understanding — making it a smart companion for exam prep.

Without any formal launch or marketing, the tool quickly went viral. Within days, over 1,000 students had signed up and generated more than 50,000 questions.

“It felt good to see others use it. Even though I was going through a lot, it made me feel like I was doing something that mattered,” Benjamin said.

Students across campuses praised the tool, especially during the exam season. Some shared that it helped them understand complex concepts better. Others requested more features, which Benjamin is now considering adding after his exams.

This isn’t Benjamin’s first innovation. He previously worked on an AI system to detect fraud in financial transactions, highlighting his growing expertise and passion for leveraging technology to solve real-world problems.
