The Assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei: End of an Era for Iran’s Islamic Republic

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader since 1989 and one of the most influential figures in the Islamic Republic’s history, was killed on February 28, 2026, at the age of 86. His death, confirmed by Iranian state media, came during large-scale joint military strikes carried out by the United States and Israel against targets across Iran.

Khamenei was struck in an Israeli airstrike on his compound in Tehran, where he was reportedly in his office carrying out official duties. Iranian state television announced his “martyrdom” early Sunday local time, describing the incident as part of a “cowardly” attack by the “criminal United States and the Zionist regime.” The government immediately declared 40 days of public mourning and a seven-day public holiday.

U.S. President Donald Trump first announced Khamenei’s death on Truth Social, calling him “one of the most evil people in history” and stating that advanced U.S. intelligence and tracking systems, combined with Israeli cooperation, made the strike possible. Trump described the operation—reportedly named something like “Epic Fury”—as aimed at eliminating threats and potentially toppling the Iranian government, with bombing to continue “as long as necessary” to achieve “peace throughout the Middle East and the world.”

Israeli officials confirmed Khamenei’s body was located following the airstrike, and multiple sources indicated other senior figures, including IRGC commanders and advisers, were also killed in the attacks.

Born on April 19, 1939, Ali Hosseini Khamenei rose through the ranks of Iran’s Shia clergy and played a key role in the 1979 Islamic Revolution. He served as president from 1981 to 1989 before succeeding Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini as Supreme Leader. Over 36 years, he shaped Iran’s foreign policy around fierce opposition to the United States and Israel—often summarized in the chants of “Death to America” and “Death to Israel”—while overseeing the expansion of Iran’s regional influence through proxy groups and ballistic missile development.

Domestically, his rule was marked by strict enforcement of Islamic law, suppression of dissent (including mass protests in 2009, 2019, and 2022), and tight control over the military, judiciary, and media. Critics accused him of overseeing widespread human rights abuses, while supporters viewed him as the guardian of the revolution against foreign interference.

Khamenei’s death creates an immediate power vacuum at the apex of Iran’s theocratic system. The Assembly of Experts is expected to convene to select a successor, though no clear frontrunner has emerged publicly amid the ongoing conflict. Iran’s armed forces have vowed a “crushing response” to the strikes, and retaliatory actions against U.S. bases in the region have already been reported, though no American casualties were confirmed as of early March 1.

Reactions worldwide have been sharply divided. In parts of Tehran and other cities, some Iranians were seen celebrating the news, viewing it as potential liberation from decades of repression. Elsewhere, loyalists mourned the loss of a figure they saw as a symbol of resistance.

Analysts describe Khamenei’s killing as a potential hinge moment for the 47-year-old Islamic Republic. He lived by confronting America and Israel; in the end, he died from military action directly involving both nations.

As Iran enters a period of uncertainty, mourning, and possible escalation, the world watches to see whether his death marks the beginning of regime change, internal fracture, or renewed defiance under new leadership.
